Pearl's Value & Vintage should win this award as we are commited to postive environmental impacts as a nonprofit second hand retailer that demonstrates how environmental sustainability and meaningful community impact can work together. Through the resale of donated clothing, furniture, household goods and other items, Pearl's extends the life of products, keeps materials in circulation and reduces waste sent to landfill.

Our business model is rooted in reuse and the circular economy. Each year, we divert approximately 400,000 kilograms of potential waste from landfill, and since opening our doors, more than 10 million kilograms of goods have been reused. Our proceeds directly support Pearlspace, preventing violence against women, Two Spirit, gender-diverse, non-binary, trans people, and children/youth by providing inclusive, supportive services to individuals and communities within the Sea to Sky corridor and Stl'atl'imx regions.

In 2026, Pearl's strengthened its environmental practices by reviewing our waste systems, identifying opportunities for improvement and introducing new recycling processes across our operations.

From January to August 2026, our overall waste diversion rate increased from 13.65% during the same period in 2025 to 18.73%—an improvement of approximately 36%. During that same period, waste sent to landfill decreased by 12,375 kilograms, from 46,125 kg to 33,750 kg. This represents a 26.83% reduction in landfill waste in just eight months.

A key driver of this progress was the introduction of four new specialty recycling streams: flexible plastics, electronics, glass and batteries. Implementing these streams required changes to our sorting and collection processes, designated recycling areas, and increased awareness and participation from employees and volunteers.

Our environmental commitment is integrated into our daily operations. Staff and volunteers actively identify materials that can be reused or diverted, helping make waste reduction part of our workplace culture rather than a one-time initiative.

Pearl's also creates environmental impact through our core purpose: keeping donated goods in circulation. Every item purchased second hand represents an opportunity to extend the life of a product, reduce unnecessary disposal and provide an affordable alternative to buying new. At the same time, the revenue generated from these donations is reinvested directly into programs and services supporting

Our impact therefore creates a powerful ripple effect: donations become reused goods, reused goods reduce waste, reduced waste benefits the environment, and the resulting revenue strengthens our community.
