Step Out!

Step Out! is Squamish's premier platform for Improvisational Theatre and Applied Improvisation, transforming our community's artistic landscape since 2022. We've created the region's only comprehensive improv programming, serving as both performance venue and educational hub that nurtures artistic expression across all ages and abilities.

Our mission extends beyond entertainment—we're cultivating a thriving arts ecosystem where creativity flourishes. Through weekly classes, we've introduced hundreds of community members from ages 5-70 (over 300 people) to improvisation and integrative arts, many discovering hidden talents and newfound confidence. Our quarterly comedy shows provide the Sea to Sky corridor's only regular platform for improvisational performance, featuring local talent alongside established artists. Our kids spring and summer camps integrate improv, aerial silks and visual arts catering to a diverse range of children, often appealing to children with neurodiversity's.

"I accept absolutely everybody" isn't just our motto—it's our practice. We welcome performers of all abilities, backgrounds, and experience levels, creating adaptive programming that ensures meaningful participation in artistic expression. Our shows feature performers ranging from complete beginners to seasoned improvisers, fostering environments where artistic risk-taking is celebrated.

Strategic partnerships define our regional impact. We collaborate with Whistler performers for our shows and secure professional Vancouver improvisers for specialized workshops, bringing urban artistic expertise to our rural community while creating performance opportunities that didn't previously exist. These collaborations have established us as a cultural bridge connecting Sea to Sky artistic communities.

Beyond performance, we're deeply invested in arts education and professional development. Our programming includes masterclasses with visiting artists, mentorship opportunities for emerging performers, and active contribution to community events. We've made improvisation an integral part of Squamish's artistic offerings while maintaining affordability and accessibility.

Our quarterly performances have become community celebrations, drawing audiences regionwide to witness artistic growth firsthand. These events strengthen community bonds through shared creative experiences while providing affordable, accessible entertainment that serves diverse demographics simultaneously.

What sets us apart is our commitment to sustainable arts business practices that prioritize community benefit alongside artistic excellence. We've proven that inclusive programming can thrive economically while serving everyone from children building confidence, to adults rediscovering creativity, to seniors seeking connection.

Our board membership with Howe Sound Performing Arts Association demonstrates leadership in the broader arts community, building strategic partnerships that benefit all local cultural organizations. We volunteer extensive hours organizing free events and provide mentoring that extends our impact beyond paid programming.

Step Out! deserves this award because we've filled a critical gap in our region's arts landscape while establishing new standards for inclusive artistic programming. Our success isn't measured only in ticket sales but in transformed lives—participants who've discovered artistic voices, built lasting friendships, and developed skills enhancing their personal and professional lives. We've created an essential cultural resource that makes Squamish a more vibrant, creative place to live, proving that arts organizations can serve their communities while maintaining artistic integrity and financial sustainability.
