Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR) has been saving lives in Squamish, one of BC's most challenging outdoor environments, since 1975.

Operating 24/7, our entirely volunteer team of Squamish locals responds to an average of 120-150 emergencies annually, helping those lost or injured in the rugged terrain in one of the most heavily used outdoor recreation areas in Canada.

We all know Squamish is a world-class outdoor destination and the gateway to rugged terrain typical to BC. The increase in recreational activities, the massive population growth, and tourism has driven a steady year over year 137% increase in SAR callouts since 2010. By the end of the next decade Squamish SAR is forecasted to need to respond to 200 calls per year.

Not only does the team at SAR rescue people when they are in need, there is an entire volunteer group in the organization that focuses on prevention. The prevention team visits events, schools and programs to share information about staying safe in the backcountry.

Last year the community came together to vote Squamish SAR as the winner of the North America-wide Defender Service Awards. Our little town even beat out Texas SAR! Squamish residents know how to build community and we are grateful to be a small part of it!
