PearlSpace has been providing crisis based response for survivors of gender-based violence in Squamish since 1981. Over the past 4 decades PearlSpace has grown and evolved to meet the community need for emergency housing, emotional support, and crisis response services. Today the society provides response and prevention services throughout the Sea to Sky region with 10,000 client interactions each year. The society's vision is a community free from violence where people are supported and connected and where families can thrive. The hub of the society's activities in Squamish is the PearlSpace Drop-In Centre on third avenue. This vital community amenity is a life line for survivors of violence and is also a hub for connection with events bringing diverse community members together over shared meals, through support groups, multicultural art and book clubs, and gender-diverse inclusion activities as well as through one-to-one crisis support for survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault including emotional support, emergency housing, outreach services, accessing resources and support in referrals to other supportive services in the community. The society works from an intersectional feminist perspective, recognizing that all facets of an individuals identity can create different layers of barriers to safety, equity, and inclusion. We strive to provide the community with a safe, supportive, and inclusive space while advocating for equity, justice, and the elimination of violence.
